Year 8 Personal Development Letter.

Dear Parents and Carers,

As a part of your child’s education at Monkton Wood Academy, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme within their Personal Development lessons. Teaching Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education is our legal duty, and the government provides guidance which we must comply with. Personal Development is the curriculum subject that gives young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives and meet their full potential.

I am writing to let you know that, during this term, your child’s class will be taking part in lessons which will focus on the relationships and sex education (RSE) aspect of this programme. Year 8 RSE lessons will include teaching about healthy relationships, including:
Relationships and Sex Education

This lesson will look at what touching each other can be like in different types of relationship, how RSE is taught at different stages of school and what different types of relationships there are.

Being Yourself and Self Love
This lesson will look at what self-love is and how physical and mental health link into the self-love.
Healthy and Respectful Relationships
This lesson will look at characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships, study the different aspects of a relationship and how they are connected.
What is Love?
This lesson will look the different types of love, how you give and receive love, and the languages of love.
Dealing with Conflict
This lesson will look at where in our lives conflict might occur, what might cause a conflict and feeling may vary in the same situation.
Periods and the Menstrual Cycle
This lesson will look at the role of the menstrual cycle in reproduction, the different types of feminine hygiene products available and how they are used.
An introduction to contraception
This lesson will look at the concept of abstinence, understand the ways of reducing pregnancy and the variety of contraception available.
Sexual Orientation
This lesson will look at the different terms and concepts used for sexual orientation, explore the challenges and prejudices of LGBTQ+, understand the damaging effect of homophobic language.

All Personal Development teaching takes place in a safe learning environment and is underpinned by our school ethos and values. We work together to raise awareness and respect all viewpoints.
