Physical Education

Physical Education (PE) at Monkton Wood Academy aims to promote the physical, mental, and social well-being of students through a diverse range of activities. The curriculum is designed to develop students’ skills, knowledge, and understanding of various sports and physical fitness, while fostering important values such as resilience, teamwork, and reliance. PE lessons are structured to provide a balanced combination of theory and practical components, ensuring students gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Key Stage 3

During Key Stage 3, students participate in a rotation of activities throughout the academic year. In Term 1, students focus on hockey, developing skills, tactics, and an understanding of the rules. Term 2 involves indoor games, where students develop skills in various indoor sports. Term 3 introduces football, emphasising skills development, tactics, and rules. In Term 4, students explore gymnastics, focusing on skills and sequence development. Netball/rugby is the focus of Term 5, with an emphasis on skills, tactics, and rules. Finally, in Term 6, students engage in fitness activities, developing skills, planning, and understanding the health benefits of fitness. Throughout Key Stage 3, students also learn about sports science knowledge and health-related topics.

Key Stage 4 - Core PE

At Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to make choices based on their preferences. In the sports hall, students can choose activities like badminton, basketball, and volleyball. In the small hall, options include volleyball, benchball, and dodgeball. On the ATP/field, choices range from football and hockey to capture the flag and rugby. The fitness suite offers activities such as Just Dance, circuits, walking/running, and gym exercises. Hard court options include netball and handball, while ATP choices encompass cricket, tennis, and ultimate frisbee. On the field, students can engage in athletics, rounders, baseball/softball, and cricket. The curriculum at this stage also covers topics like sports science, health, energy balance, and hygiene.

Key Stage 4 - GCSE

During GCSE, students delve deeper into various aspects of physical education. They study applied anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, aerobic and anaerobic exercise, physical training principles, sports psychology, socio-cultural aspects of sports, and health, fitness, and wellbeing. Practical lessons involve a variety of activities, allowing students to identify their top three choices for further development. In addition, summer activities include cricket, athletics, tennis, and softball.

Key Stage 4 - Cambridge National Certificate

Students explore performance and leadership in sports activities, organising and planning sports sessions, and reviewing their own performance. They also study sport and the media, contemporary issues in sport, and develop practical and coaching skills in their chosen sport. Summer activities for CAMNAT include cricket, athletics, tennis, and softball.
