Business Studies

“Believe you can and you are halfway there!”

We want students to enjoy and have a passion for learning about the world of business. Students will develop an understanding of what an entrepreneur is and the nature of business activity, marketing and human resources, operations and finance, and also modern influences on business activity including the environment, ethics and globalisation. We want students to develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively, to demonstrate business acumen, and draw on evidence to make informed business decisions and solve business problems. We want students to develop as effective and independent learners, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds to make informed judgements. Students should be able to investigate and analyse real business opportunities and issues to construct well-argued, well-evidenced, balanced and structured arguments, demonstrating their depth and breadth of understanding of business

Key Stage 4

In Business Studies at Monkton Wood Academy, students will explore the world of business through a comprehensive curriculum. In Year 10, they will learn about business enterprise, planning, ownership, business aims and objectives, marketing, and the role of stakeholders. They will also study human resources, organisational structures, communication, and employment-related topics. In Year 11, the focus shifts to operations, finance, and the influences on businesses, including ethical considerations, the economic climate, and globalisation. Throughout the course, students will be assessed through tests and mock exams, preparing them for the final examinations.

The curriculum is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in business principles and skills. It covers various topics, including entrepreneurship, market research, marketing strategies, finance, and operational aspects such as business location and supplier management. Students will also explore the interdependence of businesses and the influence of ethical, environmental, and global factors. The course emphasises understanding key concepts, such as business ownership, human resources, and financial management. Regular assessments, including end-of-unit tests and mock exams, ensure that students can apply their knowledge effectively and prepare for the final examinations.

Overall, the Key Stage 4 Business Studies curriculum offers a comprehensive exploration of the business world. It equips students with essential knowledge and skills, enabling them to understand the complexities of business operations, make informed decisions, and pursue further studies or careers in the field. Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical application, students develop a well-rounded understanding of business concepts and their real-world implications.
