In English we strive for students to be confident in their ability to articulate themselves purposefully and effectively both verbally and through the written word. We facilitate their awareness of the power of language and how it is used to create meaning and influence their thinking; we encourage them to think critically, challenge narratives and be curious about the world around them. Through a diverse choice of texts, we aim to foster passion and creativity; enabling students to develop empathy, insight, and perspective so that they can be successful citizens of the modern world. We give them opportunities to appreciate British culture – our shared heritage and traditions but also to celebrate global diversity.
The KS3 English curriculum is designed to develop students’ confidence, creativity, and critical thinking through a broad and engaging range of literary and non-literary texts. They will explore key genres, themes, and skills which prepare them for GCSE study whilst encouraging a lifelong appreciation of language and literature. Students will study a diverse selection of texts, produce a range of creative and analytical writing and build oracy skills through structured debates and discussions.
Students are assessed through a combination of written tasks, and oral presentations. The curriculum is sequenced to ensure progression in vocabulary, analytical skills, and technical accuracy, building a strong foundation for their futures as articulate, insightful people.
The KS4 English curriculum builds on the knowledge and skills developed at KS3, preparing students for the challenges of GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. It aims to deepen analytical thinking, enhance written and spoken communication, and foster an appreciation for a wide range of literary heritage and contemporary texts. Students will study set texts prescribed by the examination board, developing close reading, interpretation, and evaluative skills.
For English Language, students engage with a wide range of fiction and non-fiction extracts to develop skills in comprehension, analysis, and evaluation, focusing on how writers use language and structure to achieve effects. They will refine their ability to write with accuracy, clarity, and purpose.
They will also be encouraged to develop their confidence in public speaking, critical questioning, and persuasive communication through discussion and public speaking.
Students are formally assessed through mock examinations and ongoing classwork that mirrors GCSE assessment objectives. The curriculum ensures clear progression from KS3 by consolidating analytical and writing skills, while promoting independence and resilience. By the end of KS4, students are fully prepared for GCSE examinations and for further study at KS5.
